Tibbies are a breed of many colors and unique color combinations!
The double haired coat (a cottony undercoat with slightly stiffer guard hairs) of the Tibetan Spaniel may be almost any color. Most puppies are born very dark and lighten as they age.
Often times a plain teddy bear brown puppy develops into a striking red or gold color as he reaches maturity. All colors from blond to deep mahogany can be classified as "sable". Sometimes it is difficult to predict exactly what color an adult dog will be from looking at it’s puppy coat color.
This page offers pictures and descriptions of Tibbie colors.
- Sable -

- Golden Sable or Gold - this is a solid color generally with few dark hairs on any part of the dog.
(Vic is a Golden Sable.)
- Black and Tan - a jet black coat with tan
markings on the face, legs and tail.

- Black - a jet black coat with no tan.
- Red - a deep reddish brown.

- Liver - a lighter orange red with few darker guard hairs and most often a self-colored nose and eye rims The eyes are also often gold (light).
The above colors often have interesting white markings on the feet, legs, chest, chin, face and neck. These are all considered “markings” and are described by AKC as sable with white markings, black and tan with white markings etc. Many of the sables have much lighter breeches and fringes, these shadings are not considered white markings but can really create a “flashy” Tibbie in the show ring.
- Parti - white with splotches of color on the body and/or head.
Tibbies also occasionally appear as primarily white with sable, red, black, tan or gold markings on less than 50% of the dog. This color is referred to as a “parti-color” or “parti” in addition to the color of the markings. “Bubba” below is a sable and white parti-color.
